Thus, the Utopians hire a vicious and money-grubbing people, the Zapoletes, to do their fighting for them. Take for example, More’s Utopia, which goes to great lengths to imagine a society in which, although citizens receive some military training, they are kept from using weapons in practices of deadly force, not in order to limit their freedom, but to ensure they are capable of becoming excellent in certain virtues.įor instance, More tells us that Utopians consider both butchery of animals and hunting “unworthy of free men” because it can accustom people to “brutal pleasures” and create a “cruel disposition.” A similar line of reasoning undergirds Utopia’s strenuous anti-militarism, which not only makes its citizens loath to go to war but maintains an elaborate policy such that in cases where it cannot be avoided most fighting is done by mercenaries. Thomas More, Utopia (Image credit: Wikimedia Commons) Although neither of them had a simple or absolutist view of weapons, both entertained seriously the possibility in their major works that the habituation by citizens to the use of arms in the exercise of lethal force was destructive to virtue. This question is inspired by two of the greatest humanists of the Renaissance period in Europe, Erasmus and Thomas More. The question I’d like to pose-one inspired by the virtue ethics of Renaissance Christian humanism-is what dangers do arms hold specifically as instruments of moral formation? Or put slightly differently: what are the potential spiritual and moral hazards of increased societal armament? While attention is spent on what an arm can do to others as an instrument of violence, not nearly enough thought is given to the problem of what an arm might do to the user. Much of the debate over the Second Amendment rightly focuses on what can or should be classified legally as an “arm” and whether such an instrument is reasonable for personal use. This is clearly a kind of personal power to do violence that would be completely unrecognizable to both the legal theorists and the military technologists of 1787, when the U.S. What is a weapon, or a firearm, as defined by the constitutional “right to bear arms”? In light of the most recent mass shooting at a school in Uvalde, Texas, which left nineteen children and two adults dead, more and more people are posing this question.Īfter all, the AR-15 rifle used to murder an entire classroom full of children has been described as designed for mass murder with the capability to “explode” human bodies. J.P., if you’re reading this, Artic Outpost’s “shtick” is “spinning the 78’s” from the 30’s. Speaking of Norwegians, we’ve been streaming Artic Outpost from Norway, on Radio Garden, can’t stop listening: like one guys was the “daddio of the rad-ee-o”. OMG, the “It’s a Shame” radio jingle is fantastic! Smart PR department for running that, I’m passing that around to my radio pals! Love the “Happy Norwegian” too remember when radio people had “identifiers” like that? I remember a few from my youth. 1070 in Indiana breathed its last at the end of August 2. Here are the last couple minutes of 1070, once a powerhouse radio station in central Indiana. The owners sold the land and dismantled the towers, with no set plans to continue operating the station on 1070. WIBC’s parent company aired a sports-talk format on 1070, and later added two low-power FM signals at 93.5 and 107.5 to carry that programming.Ī sad commentary on the value of AM radio today, but in recent years the land that 1070’s towers sat on became more valuable than the station itself. On FM, WIBC has continued to do very well and remains a top-rated station, although of a much smaller listenership as radio itself has become less relevant. As 2007 drew to a close, WIBC abandoned its historic 1070 AM frequency and switched to FM at 93.1, where it still broadcasts. AM radio was changing radically in these days, as FM had long since come to dominate in listenership. It was a hugely popular radio station for decades and decades.įull service died in about 1993 on WIBC, when the station debuted a news-talk format. In central Indiana, everybody listened to WIBC at least once in a while. WIBC was what used to be called a “full service” station, playing “middle of the road” music with big personality disk jockeys and news every hour on the hour. _ĪP Media Writer David Bauder in New York contributed to this report. For many years, one of the most popular radio stations in central Indiana broadcast over 1070 AM. Authorities opened an investigation into alleged “doctor shopping,” saying he received up to 2,000 pills from four doctors over a period of six months, but he ultimately reached a deal with prosecutors that dismissed the single charge. In 2003, Limbaugh admitted an addiction to painkillers and entered rehabilitation. His popularity has survived brickbats and thrived despite personal woes. Limbaugh has frequently been accused of hate-filled speech, including bigotry and blatant racism through his comments and sketches such as “Barack the Magic Negro,” a song featured on his show that said Obama “makes guilty whites feel good” and that the politician is “black, but not authentically.” Two years later, Limbaugh would be so widely credited as key to Republicans’ takeover of Congress for the first time in 40 years, he was deemed an honorary member of the new class. His idol, Ronald Reagan, wrote a letter that Limbaugh read on the air in December 1992 and which sealed his reputation among conservatives: “You’ve become the number one voice for conservatism in our country,” Reagan wrote. The media figure’s endorsement and friendship is a conservative political treasure. These can be changed between Nodes and unlocked throughout the play. Think of Core Programs like the HOTSwitch functionality from the original game (which does appear as a Core Program in MCD), an unlocked ability that can change the way you play. As the game progresses, these hacks become more and more complex, and you discover more and more Core Programs that change your gameplay on a more basic level.Ĭore Programs are larger gameplay mechanics that change how you play the game. Some hacks will heal you, while others will give you more maximum health overall. Some hacks can make you explode with a flurry of shurikens when you’re damaged, while others simply allow you to start with a Katana or a random gun. They give you special abilities or augment what you already have. The Hacks are an interesting aspect of the game. When health doesn’t placate you, the system throws you Hack Programs. At first, you’re just working with the usual formula, but then you unlock a health bar, giving you additional hits before you’re defeated. The entire game is set up around the idea of endless content, repeating forever and ever and ever. MCD is, surprisingly, a rogue-like take on the time-stopping formula. What the game actually ended up as is far from most other Superhot titles. The game is available as a standalone title, but also in bundles with either Superhot or Superhot VR, all for varied prices. The game is free to anyone who bought the original Superhot, but not anyone who got the game through a free promotion like PlayStation Plus or Xbox Games With Gold. The game was then released earlier this week, and it was an interesting journey. Originally, Superhot: MCD was meant to be a free add-on to the original Superhot, and was slowly developed over the course of several years. But what exactly is Superhot: Mind Control Delete? Well, the answer isn’t particularly easy. And as we delved deeper into Superhot: Mind Control Delete, we discovered more and more power and more and more sinister implications around the world around Superhot as a franchise. The opening of the game continually reminds you: There isn’t anything more, there isn’t anything new to find. This is, of course, despite what the game will tell you. But now there is a whole new thing to discover in Superhot: Mind Control Delete. There was supposed to be nothing left to discover, nothing left to learn about the dark world of Superhot. Maybe you should remember that next time rather than making your customers suffer an utterly pretentious and poorly thought out fart that you thought would be deep.It was supposed to be over. I will go and enjoy a game that at least respects that customers have lives outside their games. But frankly, for the disdain and contempt you show for your customers time, you don't deserve my custom, my time or my money. Thoughtless of you wasn't it to not even consider their needs. Yes, I could skip the time in game, edit the save file, whatever. How utterly disconnected from reality must you be? How self absorbed does one have to be when clumsy metatextual **** matters more than remembering the needs of your customers and their systems? So, much as I was looking forward to playing the game, I cannot accept or support such a stupid move. And never considered console releases would auto shutdown and corrupt saves. Worse is that you considered eight hours acceptable. This attempt at being thought provoking is little more than a tone deaf troll. Or do other things with our computer or console. We might want to play other games after yours. As soon as I heard about the ending, uninstalled and refunded. Couldn't leave this review on steam either. Or that for some console Gamers, they're stuck with eight hours and a pite tially corrupted save. Then again it's also entirely unfair that the game at the end forces you to wait 2 hours, leaving the game running all that time. Then again it's also entirely unfair that the game at the end forces you to wait 2 hours, leaving the game This is an entirely unfair rating. "Technology has given an old issue a new platform," Hughes says, "but fundamentally, the relationship to capital has not changed." While apps may have increased the volume of delivery work, the reward per ride has gone down.Īccording to Sarah Hughes of CUNY's Murphy Institute for Worker Education & Labor Studies, "the 'gig' or 'app economy' is really just a new name for an old problem." Employers have long looked for ways to designate workers as independent contractors not entitled to benefits and protections. I wondered what would happen if I got hit by a bus while out on a delivery. Still, he didn't know my full name or my emergency contact. Dispatchers may seem like sketchy middlemen, but they actually act as advocates, negotiating better rates and following up if riders believe restauranteurs are illegally taking portions of in-app tips. In Manhattan, more restaurants employ delivery workers directly, on or off the books. I spoke to a number of other New York delivery riders who confirmed that loosely organized "crews" like Mike's are a common model, especially in Brooklyn. Delivery work is most lucrative when it is dangerous and unpleasant one rider told me he made $300 during a freak November blizzard. Some nights, often when the weather was especially nice, I made less than $30. On my best night-the strip club night-I took home almost $90 after an exhausting four-hour sprint. I never had reason to believe the amount I received didn't match the receipts, though I heard from other riders that tip skimming and receipt withholding did sometimes occur with other delivery apps. Sometimes, when I was out for a delivery at the end of a shift, they would add the in-app tips up without me present. Usually, the manager or owner did this in front of me, physically going through the printed-out receipts, adding up the tips, and then paying them out from the register as a lump sum. In-app tips would be counted up either at the end of the night or at the end of each delivery run, and then paid out in cash. The shifts were all four to six hours long, and the restaurants directly paid me a base shift rate of $20 to $40 in cash, which was supplemented by cash and in-app tips. In my first week on Mike's list, I snagged one weekly shift at a gourmet pizza joint and a few subs at a handful of different places. I never learned his last name, and I'd been working for him for two weeks before I met him in person. Mike coordinated delivery for several North Brooklyn restaurateurs, who all paid him in cash. If you replied first, the shift was yours. "Cool," Mike responded, "I'll put you on my list." Mike texted all of his riders whenever a shift became available. The buddy told me to text a guy named Mike and tell him I was looking for delivery work. When I moved to New York City in the summer of 2014 without a job or a plan, my roommate suggested that I talk to a cycling buddy of his. In many cases, the "moms" bringing food to the customer's front door aren't officially employed by the restaurant, or by anyone.ĭelivery work is most lucrative when it is dangerous and unpleasant one rider told me he made $300 during a freak November blizzard. But who exactly is "us"? Seamless receives a commission from restaurants for every order placed on their platform, but it's up to the restaurants to coordinate delivery. The role of your mom will be played by us," reads one of the ads in the company's current subway campaign. To the customer on the receiving end of a Seamless delivery, the informal network of labor that makes the app possible is not necessarily visible. As a member of the shadowy hoard of riders delivering North Brooklyn's Seamless orders, I was beholden to no one. No one seemed particularly concerned, though, as long as I showed up for my shifts on time. When nature bestows her gifts on us by adorning our surroundings with fresh pictures, lights, fruits, and flowers, we become new and pure in our devotion to God. These songs are generally written during the monsoon season, autumn, or spring. Gitanjali’s songs have a strong link to nature. Death seems to him as a calm ocean where he may relax when his earthly life has ended. Rabindranath depicted death as the only way to reach his God. In Bipode more raksa kato, he prayed to his God for strength and courage to tackle his issues. The fundamental message of the hymn, however, is that the devotee must give up his pride in order to get ultimate peace and contentment from his God. The opening song in the collection, Amar matha nata kore dao he tomar charandhular pore, appears to be a prayer from the poet to his God to forcefully lower the poet’s head before the Almighty. He resembles the notion of a supernatural force, the God of the Upanishads. This God has no unique picture, nor has the poet ever represented his God by symbols. Although the God of Rabindranath is the God of beauty, intelligence, and perfection, he is neither a religious or traditional god. Gitanjali’s songs can help us purify our bodies and minds in order to grow closer to God. A single line of his poetry may make anyone forget about the world’s problems. According to Yeats, these songs arose from immense sadness and intense emotion. The poet’s prayers are not for mortal or material things. He also asked for the abolition of caste prejudice. When the protests against the British government became violent and nonviolent, the poet appealed to Bharatvidhata to awaken his compatriots into the paradise of wisdom and labour. It is important to understand that Gitanjali was composed in British India. In two songs, He mor chitto punyatirthe jagore dhire (song number 106) and He mor durbhaga desh (song no 108), the poet urged his countrymen to band together against both internal and external calamities. Aside from certain personal prayers, some songs are also directed to the Bharatvidhata-the God of India. Even if God’s messages were not always spoken, the poet expresses his prayers and sentiments. To begin, the majority of these songs are composed as dialogues between the poet and God. His strong humanism keeps his mysticism in check and keeps it from getting out of hand.Ĭheck out the complete UPSC Syllabus Story of Gitanjali Nor does he have the slightest desire to be a monk. He doesn’t deny sense experience, but instead turns it into a way to have a spiritual experience. He doesn’t try to get away from real life, but he does enjoy the joy of living. He doesn’t completely doubt what he thinks and what he feels. Still, Tagore’s version of mysticism is a little bit different from the first. Tagore was influenced by a lot of mystic writers, such as Walt Whitman, Kahlil Gibran, and, to some extent, Sri Aurobindo. This type of mysticism is based on the ideas of renunciation, detachment from the world, and asceticism. All mystics try to separate themselves from the outside world and connect with the world inside. Mysticism is not something that can be explained logically. In some ways, realism and common sense are at odds with mysticism. The mystic tries to get in touch with the inner, ultimate reality in a way that is direct and intuitive. A mystic thinks that the world we see with our eyes and ears is not real and that there is a more real world behind it that can only be understood spiritually, not through the senses. According to Indian philosophy, mysticism is the highest stage where the human soul is in direct contact with God. The main idea in Gitanjali is mysticism, which also brings up a number of other ideas. Tagore won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1913 in part because of this collection, but not everyone agrees that it is his best work. A lot of the images he uses come from nature, and the mood is mostly low-key and quiet. Love is the main theme, but some poems also talk about the struggle between spiritual longings and earthly desires. He also wrote music to go with these words. Tagore based the poems in Gitanjali on devotional songs from India in the Middle Ages. It was published in 1912 with an introduction by William Butler Yeats. Tagore then turned it into English prose poems called Gitanjali: Song Offerings. Rabindranath Tagore’s most well-known work, Gtjali, is a collection of poems that came out in India in 1910. |
